artist cv examples

These are some of the artist c.v's that I found that I liked because they were some of the clearer ones to read and understand, without being an over the top design that can be more like abstract artworks.

social commentary photo shoot

The photo shoot was meant to portray the journey several pets take from a novel idea for a present to becoming forgotten and eventually abandoned. The idea was to have a really bright, glitzty happy seen opposed with a darker gloomy scene which both depict a dog at different stages. The top box is supposed to depict the dog as a christmas present, yet the one underneath represents it's abandonment and homelessness. It would have been nice to have been able to depict more than two stages which would have created more of an idea of the downfall of the pet.

photomontage series

The theme for the project was social commentary, so I chose to comment on the neglect of domestic pets. I decided to use a combination of hand drawn images with photographs for a quirky quality. The images are meant to show the ways people forget the responsibility involved with an animal. The roles of the child and dog are played in reverse as I thought it would strengthen the emotional response.

social commentary installation

Photo Media Diploma One

Mary Grainger

Installation photo shoot

Social Commentary Theme; Animal Neglect.

Proposal:

My idea is to display the process some animals go through as they are taken into homes as an ideal present, only to be forgotten about and neglected as the novelty wears off, or circumstances change. Often animals are treated as toys with no regard to their wellbeing or eventual outcome as they grow older. Many ending up strays, abandoned and malnourished.

The installation is designed to tell the story of a journey from treasure to trash. How the idea of a pet is taken for granted ending in despair  for the animal. I am hoping to create two similar yet opposing scenes. One will depict a happy Christmas time, with ornaments, and an adorned box with a puppy jumping out. The other will again use a box that is being used as a home for the dog, with a tattered rag, newspaper , old bone ect.

The Christmas box needs to be bright, well lit and possibly higher than the homeless box.  The homeless box should be lower, and darker, exaggerating the differences between the two scenes and the emotion that they provoke. There could be two different environments and levels within the one image.

The pup and the dog will either be created with silhouetted cardboard cut outs or a soft toy that can take different forms and positions.

Props Needed:

Two medium sized cardboard boxes

Extra cardboard

Rags and blanket

Newspaper

Red ribbon

Christmas baubles

Toy Dogs

Cut Outs

Old Bone

Dog toys

Plinth/ Table

White Cloth

Dora Maar.1934. I liked this montage because its an early example that shows how elegant the compositions could be, arranging totally contrasting elements into one image that somehow seems to be harmonious. Its unusual too, a kind of evolving unwordly creature.

Martha Rosler. 'Bringing the war home; Home beautiful'. This artist is well known for her images that push the boundaries between political, social and private lines. Often critcal of war, consumerism and materialism. This one was made from the collation of magazine images, making a statement as the images and stories of hardship and violence were alongside the adverts for glamour and luxuries. I like the composite as it creates a scene of clashing emotion with the heat and movement drawing in around the clean home and stereotypical self oriented model figure.
Soviet propaganda photomontage. I was drawn to this image as it is direct in its purpose, and really reflects an important period of history. Commenting on the changing political systems, war and the Soviet lifestyle. The designers were talented to have produced such a strong image without the technological advancements or mass imagery we have today. Although it is particularly based on such a strong topic, I thought it was a good example of how a photomontage is used for social commentary.
